Summer piano lessons

I sent a letter and sign-up form home to all of my piano students.  Please fill out the form and send it back to me when you can.  Please mark the slots that work best for you, OR, mark the slots that wouldn't work at all.  The quicker it is sent in, the easier it will be to get a slot that you request.  What a wonderful job the students did at the recital!-Hats off to all of the kids, and another big thank-you goes out to the parents for all of the great food!!

The Spring Production is Approaching!

All students involved will be able to be out of uniform that day. Any parents that wish to come may, but as with all senior lunches, it is standing room only.

Memorization of lines for the Eighth Grade

By now, all but the four main parts of Huck, Tom, King, and Duke, should have their lines memorized.  "Duke and King" should have their lines memorized by April 30, and "Tom and Huck" by May 7.  I will post a wish list soon.  We have many props from "Tom Sawyer" so we shouldn't be in need of too many things!

Spring Fifth Grade Music News

Looking at the calendar, May 12 is already the last day of music class!  We don't have class the week of the 19th due to the concert, the 26th is Memorial Day, and June 2 is Track and Field Day.  We will do a few more in-class worksheets, as well as continuing our unit on different rhythm and sounds from other cultures.  If your child had a low score on a certain worksheet, there will be three more coming up in which they can raise their grade.

The Talent Show was a great success!

Thank-you to all the students who participated.  It was loads of fun!  What talent we have at SHS!!

April Fifth Grade Music News

This month, fifth graders will be learning about pentatonic(five note) scale patterns, listening to music from many different cultures, learning syncopation(off-beat rhythms), and continuing on their concepts of basic treble clef note reading.  We will have roughly three in-class worksheets in the next few weeks to chart their progress on learning these concepts.

Second, Fourth, and Sixth Concert Lyrics

April 3, 2008- All Students received the lyrics for the spring concert, "Huckleberry Finn," this week.  All of the grades are already off to a great start and have many of the songs memorized!  Anne Hedlund, our wonderful spring choreographer, will be coming to classes beginning the week of April 14 to work out actions/moves with the classes.  If the students have all lyrics memorized by then, it will make learning the choreography that much easier.  Here's to another exciting concert season!  And remember, whichever class sings the best to their potential, wins a non-uniform day!!

TALENT SHOW IS COMING!!!

Talent show Try-outs

Thursday, April 17, is the annual Sacred Heart Talent Show!  Try-outs will be the week of March 31 and the week of April 7.  Let's try to get as much variety as possible this year! We would also like more middle school kids to try-out!  Due to the large amounts of piano playing tryouts, piano slots will be limited.  Singing, gymnastics, dancing, other instruments, skits, baton twirling--The list of possibilities is endless!  Please, no lip-syncing or inappropriate music.  Try-outs will be judged on originality and creativity.  Please fill out and return the form available from Mr. Melius, Ms. Ekegren, Ms. Rios, or the office by Monday, April 7.  We look forward to seeing The Sacred Heart students shine!!

Eighth Grade Musical

"Huckleberry Finn" will be the spring musical, given on Thursday, May 22.  This is the sequel to "Tom Sawyer," which the eighth grade performed in when they were in first grade!  Where does the time go?  Scripts will arrive the first week of March, with try-outs continuing through the second week.  Hopefully over the long spring break, students will have plenty of time to learn their lines!

February Eighth Grade Music News

Wednesday, Feb. 6 we will have a test on the musical "West Side Story." This will be short answer, true/false, matching, essay, and compare/contrast.

Eight grade will be writing a five page paper on a deceased musician, detailing their lives, careers, and final days. This will fit all English grading standards. The paper can have pictures, charts, song lyrics, fun facts, etc. for a total of over 5 pages. However, the written work has to be at least 5 pages. This will be due Wednesday, March 12.

We will also be narrowing down our choices for the spring musical soon. It's almost that time again!

February Sixth Grade Music News

Sixth grade is finishing up their unit on basic rhythm and note reading. We will have a few more "pop" quizzes this month to insure that all rhythmic notation is understood. The unit test will be at the beginning of March, and soon after, we will receive the lyrics to the spring concert songs.

01/24/08 Homeroom baskets for the family dance!

Each class will be responsible for putting together a basket for the auction. Our homeroom’s theme is “Music, Music, Music!” We are looking for donations of selected items and/or cash donations. Jill Steinhauser has offered to be our parent helper this year. Thanks, Jill!

Some ideas are as follow

headphones(we already have!)
I-Tunes cards
I-pods accessories
CD’s
Blank CD’s
music store gift cards
musical DVD’s
etc. etc. etc.......

In addition, we are also putting together a mini-music basket geared toward children the age of our homeroom, with a maximum cost of $10. We will put this basket together ourselves, so please send some spare change or some other item with your child for this basket. Please donate what you can and send the item or money with your child. We appreciate all of your support!

In the first few weeks of music, we will watch, critique, and take a test on the musical "West Side Story" and also be assigned a composer to write about in a paper.

12/18/07 BRAVO! BRAVO!

Congratulations everyone on the wonderful job that the students did on our production of "The Rented Christmas!" The Kindergarten, first, third, and fifth grades did great jobs on their singing and actions. Seventh grade, you were true professionals in your acting and dedication!
