We have had some of these words before, but they are ones that the children still have trouble with.  There are no patterns to follow.  Practice and remembering the shape and size of the word often help.

Here is a little summary of what we've been doing the last few weeks and what is coming up this week.

I want to thank Alyssa Farrell's mom, Kristin, for the wonderful costume she created for our Magazine Drive Prize Pig "Mrs. Bacon". Mrs. Bacon ran like a greased pig, but came in second to Mrs. Hippen's pig in our Pigout Party Pig Race last Thursday. She may have lost the race, but she was #1 in cuteness!!

Religion: Holy Week and Easter; The Last Supper and the very First Communion; The miracle of the loaves and fishes (as Jesus's preparation for the institution of Eucharist); Beatitude: Blessed are they who suffer persecution for righteousness sake, theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Reading: Stories "Brothers and Sisters" and "Jalapeno Bagels" (coming up "Carousels"); using a thesaurus to find synonyms; defining contractions; -le syllable; verbs (present and past tense); silent reading for comprehension; oral reading for fluency, expression, and "sounding out" words; supplementary reading: leveled and phonic readers; Keep the Lights Burning, Abbie (extension of MN studies-Split Rock Lighthouse); Paul Bunyan stories and books; AR books/tests.

Math: Memorization of Subtraction facts -4, -5, -6 (test on Tuesday, April 1), and -7. Counting quarters (counting by 25); Writing money in the $_._ _ format; Subtracting double digit numbers with and without "trading" (regrouping, borrowing); Using tangrams to cover geometric shapes serveral different ways; Rounding two digit numbers to the nearest 10; Finding 1/2 of even and odd number groups, using the Remainder notation; Estimating and counting large collections of objects.

Cursive: We now know the following cursive letters: a, c, d, e, g, h, i, k, l, t, I, T. We will be learning: p, j, u, r, s.

Social Studies: Minnesota overview: 4 important cities (Mpls, St. Paul, Duluth, Rochester), their locations and what makes them important; State symbols (State flower, bird, rock, muffin, fish, etc.); University of Minnesota rouser and Golden Gopher fun; famous Minnesotans (Judy Garland, Prince, Charles Lindbergh, Wanda Gag (Millions of Cats), Charles Schultz, HHH, etc.); Folk hero Paul Bunyan and his blue ox, Babe; natural resources (lakes, lumber, farmland, iron ore). *Our 4th Grade teacher, Mr. David Heintz, will be speaking to the class about his experiences as the winner of the milk carton boat race several times in the Minneapolis Aquatennial celebration.*

Writing: The children created new constellations from the stars of the Big Dipper and wrote marvelous myths about how they were formed. These stories and illustrations will be displayed Creativity Night in the gym. (Tuesday, April 29).

Science: We finished our space unit: stars and constellations; sun, moon, earth; what causes day and night; space travel (We watched a video of astronauts working in the space shuttle and tasted astronaut food.) atmosphere, meteorites.

 

Whew!! You can see why we needed that spring break. We are still busy learning and the next two months will be even busier!! Hang in there...second graders are awesome and can do anything!
