Cinco de Mayo is a date of great importance for the Mexican community. It marks the victory of the Mexican Army over the French at the Battle of Puebla. This week we will learn a little more about this celebration.

FOURTH: Continue to study numbers 1-100 because we will keep on having quizzes on the spelling of these numbers.

FIFTH and SIXTH:  Practice reading El Padre Nuestro. Remember to look up the words cielo, nombre, reino, voluntad, tierra, pan, dia, ofensas, nosotros, tentación, mal  in your dictionary.

SEVENTH:  Be ready to recite El Padre Nuestro prayer. We have been praying it daily and by now you should be able to easily memorize it.

FIFTH: Study for vocabulary quiz: rompecabezas, tarea, trabajar, abajo, caminar, repartir, periódico, paraguas. Also, keep practicing your reading skills.

SIXTH: Make sure to turn in last week's homework if you haven't done so and practice your pronunciation as you are being graded for it.

SEVENTH: Be prepared to recite the dialogue with a classmate on Monday. David will be in charge of our minuto cultural on Monday and Kevin will do it Wednesday.

SEMANA DEL SIETE DE ABRIL (4/7/08)

KINDERGARTEN: We have been learning new vocabulary regarding items we find in the classroom. We answer the question ¿qué es esto? (what is this?) to practice all the new words.

FIRST: First graders are counting up to veinte (20) and doing a great job!

SECOND: We are busy learning new animals. They have done crossword puzzles, "use the clues" games and used individual whiteboards to draw the animal they are given in Spanish. Second graders are a busy bunch and love all this animal talk. Ask them about pez, culebra, gato, pájaro, pato, perro, caballo, elefante, gallina, pollo, vaca, puerco, serpiente...

THIRD: We started la lección 2 and hopefully will finish it this week. Third graders are working on their spelling and pronunciation skills and learning lots of new vocabulary.

FOURTH: Took a quiz on la lección 8, and practiced reading skills in pairs taking turns to read the lesson's dialog. Let's keep it up!

FiFTH: We are concentrating on mastering our pronunciation. Please keep reading the "Con mi hermano"  book at home to practice before you are graded on your reading skills again.

SIXTH: Write a short description of yourself, based on the example given to you on the bottom of page 24 of your textbook that we reviewed in class last week. Please read it to yourselves a couple of times as you will be reciting it for your classmates.

SEVENTH: Prepare for Monday's quiz on gender of nouns: masculino o femenino. Remember the gender rules we have covered: FEMENINO NOUNS END IN -a, -sión, -ción, -dad, -tad, -tud, -umbre. Also the word "mano'' (hand).   MASCULINO NOUNS END IN  -o, -l-o-n-e-r-s, -maAlso the words "dia'(day), "mapa" (map), "planeta" (planet), "sofá"

Fourth grade: Study vocabulary on page 44 of the textbook for the quiz we never took on Friday

Fifth grade:  Read the story MI HERMANO from the Surprise book. Read it first in English and, if you have time, also in Spanish since we will be going through this story in class. We will this way work on our reading and pronuntiation skills and also build our vocabulary.

Sixth grade: Remember we are having a review test. The test will cover shapes, colors, numbers, pronouns, dates, word spelling, and pages 7-16 of the textbook. If you have any questions come and see me before the test.

Seventh grade: Monday we will have a quiz on the -ar verbs. You will need to know the Spanish pronouns yo, tú, él (ella), nosotros (as), vosotros (as), ellos (as) and the conjugation endings -o, -as, -a, -amos, -ais, -an. Refer to your class notes and your yellow verb chart for review. John will be in charge of our  minuto cultural.

Sixth grade: 1) What would your name be if you would have been born in a Spanish speaking country?   2) Do exercise 3 on page 20 of your textbook.  Write the role play on your own, without a partner .

Seventh grade: Study for a QUIZ on the planets: La Tierra (Earth), Marte (Mars), Mercurio (Mercury), Júpiter (Jupiter), Venus (Venus), Saturno (Saturn), and also Luna (Moon) y Sol (Sun). To help you remember these planets, think about the days of the week in Spanish.

KINDER: We are learning about La Familia. We have learned el papá, la mamá, el hermano, la hermana, el bebé, el abuelo, la abuela. This week we will incorporate these family members into our día de San Valentín celebration by making cards for them.

FIRST: First graders are performing skits using a micrófono to learn how to greet someone and introduce themselves. We have watched the ¿cómo estás? video to guide ourselves, and we are singing the alfabeto song.

SECOND: We are continuing Los meses del año by using different handouts, looking at the calendar, reviewing las estaciones (the seasons) and answering the question ¿cuándo es tu cumpleaños? Second grade is also learning el alfabeto.

THIRD: We are now following a textbook. We have so far covered páginas 4-6, la escuela y los saludos and are working on our reading and pronuntiation skills.

FOURTH: We are continuing our review of question words: qué, cuándo, por qué, dónde, quién, cómo, cuánto, cuánta, cuántos, cuántas, de quién. We have learned that all question words in Spanish have an accent mark (tilde) which differentiates them from other words.

FIFTH: We are ready to present our projects to the rest of the class and be graded on pronuntiation. Please read your part many times to become familiar with it and if possible read it in front of an audience (your family).

SIXTH: We are learning how to form dates in Spanish, using el + number + de + month. For Wednesday, your homework consists of telling the dates of the following holidays:
-Martin Luther King day
-San Patricio
-San Valentin
-Navidad
-Labor day
You can refer to your textbook, página 17 under the ¡OJO! section and your class notes from last week.

SEVENTH: For this week, look up the months and the names of the planets in your dictionaries. Then check your dictado and see if you spelled them correctly in class last Wednesday. Morgan will be in charge of the Culture Minute on Monday

SEMANA DEL 14 DE ENERO (1/14/08)

¡FELIZ AÑO NUEVO A TODOS!
KINDERGARTEN: We are learning to introduce ourselves by asking and answering Como te llamas?. Students made pictures of themselves, colored and decorated nametags, watched a video regarding introductions, and performed a little skit in front of the class. We have been having fun with this and will continue it this week.

FIRST GRADE:We are studying "LAS ESTACIONES"(The Seasons). We have covered Invierno and Primavera so far and next week we will continue with Verano and Otono. To make sure we remember them, we are learning a little song and even doing a little dancing in class. Great moves everyone!!

SECOND GRADE:

We are also talking about The Seasons and this week we will begin also learning "Los Meses del Ano". We will look at a calendar and place the different months in their right season.

THIRD GRADE: We are almost finished with the story of Ricitos de Oro y los Tres Osos. By the end of this week, the book that the third graders made should be coming home. We have learned lots of new vocabulary!

FOURTH: Forth graders have been practicing their reading and listening comprenhension and they are doing a great job. Monday they will have a vocabulary QUIZ covering pages 40-42 of their textbook.

FIFTH GRADE: We have worked on listening and writing skills by taking a long "Dictado". Make sure to turn in your sheets on Wednesday with all the blanks filled in. Practice reading it at home so that you can read it in class for the other students. This assignment will be graded.

SIXTH GRADE: You will have a quiz covering pages 7-13 of the textbook. We will continue to ask Como se dice? (how do you say?) and will learn to ask how to spell a word in Spanish.

EIGHTH GRADE: We are getting to the end of our time together. I am surely going to miss all of you and we will have a little goodbye Fiesta on Wednesday. We will talk about the details on Monday. In the meantime, study for the second part of your final review quiz, which includes the Pronouns, verbs Ser and Estar and the Colors. You all did very well in te first part of the quiz and the grades really show it! Keep it up.
Also, remember to turn in your dictionaries so that seventh grade can use them.

KINDERGARDEN is learning Christmas Carols (Villancicos), playing sillas musicales (musical chairs) and having some fun.

FIRST GRADE is talking food: we learned about leche, agua, uvas, cereal, pollo, ensalada, platanos, zanahorias, chocolate, hamburguesas, dulces, patatas, fresas, pan, huevos, manzanas, naranjas, pastel.. We will continue with our food vocabulary this week.

SECOND GRADE is playing hangman to help them learn Los Animales. We also worked on a crossword puzzle and animal matches. This week we will continue learning about them.

THIRD GRADE continues to work on Ricitos De Oro . They are doing a wonderful job practicing their listening skills and learning lots of new vocabulary.

FOURTH: Refer to pagina 38 of your textbook and answer the question Que tiene tu casa?. Also, you are having your first QUIZ on Friday. The quiz will cover the different rooms of a house. You can refer to your notes and your texbook. Buena suerte!.
